Q: How do i get my own BBS?

A: well a multitude of ways
one is to find an old puter (say 486 sx 25 w 16 or so megs)
install win950(with a stronger box you can of course use a more
bloated (and stable) version of win9x)..personally i find win950(a)
pretty durn stable as long as it's firewalled against DoS's)
then install a network card on it
  then
go to www.synchro.net and get the win9x (win32) version
if 3.00c is newest then also get the beta 3.10 "upgrade"
so you can make yourself H excempt (no time out on "no activity on prompt")

there are also many other bbs programs out there
  www.thebbs.org has links to most

synchronet has bbs's for linux, os2, dos and windows 9x
only the linux and win9x do telnet outta the box tho
  "read read read"
and if all else fails ask on the forum for synchronet
  (link on synchronet page)
or ask in my bbs (i'd suggest asking on the forum though) :-)

unless you are on a static IP you'll also want a dynamic ip domain
www.dyndns.org is very good (and free)
a client for above is DeeEnEs (win9x)

and you will probably want to check if your isp (internet service provider)
_really_ does allow you to run local hosted servers

Q: Is it difficult having your own bbs?

A: well i guess that depends on how you define difficult, while i would
not recommend it to most "click and use" only users, anyone who has
a bit of computer experience could get the hang of it. IF however
you are the kind who will not, cannot, or can't be bothered to read
manuals, then you might as well stay away from _all_ servers.
remember:ANY AND ALL SERVERS CAN CONSTITUTE A SECURITY BREACH!!!
bbs's, http (web), ftp, nutella, mail, irc, Xwin, so on so forth ad nauseum

so yes it's recommended you read the manuals first and THEN
  decide :-)

as for difficult, if you read the manuals, then no it's not, if you don't read
manuals, then it's very difficult. A little Dos (ms or dr) or linux
"know how" helps, specifically file paths and so on
and since many doorways need dos installations...
it's not really as bad as all that though :-))
