Q: Why did you choose the BBS format over a
webforum/ftp download/irc/mailinglist/game server combo?
A: well just this "webforum/ftp download/irc/mailinglist/game server"
makes me go..hmm and you have to ask?
i need to be able to host it meself,
so it should be low bandwidth i.e. text rather than html or images
it should be easy on processor power, ie not irc or game server
it should be small, not need a real domain or mx host
ie not mailinglist
so on so on
also i liked the old bbs days
the community spirit was better, a bbs had a community spirit of helping
newbies (well the ones i tried did)
it was largely self policed, ppl took many of trouble makers under wings
and taught them "bbs manners", sure some dimwits needed to be blocked out
hey..we still got that option
Q: But why BBS..it's text, telnet is complex, it isn't pretty like
html+shockwave+flash+java+ccs+idunnowhat
A: Ok, it's not pretty, the printed pages of an encyclopedia aren't
as pretty as the cd-rom versions flashy music and wav's and pictures
never-the-less the information DOES get through
the reason for choosing bbs (besides prior ones) is that it IS telnet
telnet is complex?
bbs's are complex?
GOOD!!! let's sort out the ones who are so unmotivated that they
can't be bothered to read up on one program and one interface!!!
(no offence!!!)
There are help menu's in here, sure it will take a while
to get to know system, no longer i can assure you than it took you to
learn to use windows first time
and a heck of a lot shorter than learning dos will take those of ya
that haven't learned it already
and one part point is that you are supposed to be able to get here from the
old puter you might be restoring (eventually via shell account)
which means (if you have original modem) transfer speeds of
300 bps?...look you might have a pIII N:th Mhz
with gazillion RAM same for HDD and a nippy cable connection
i don't, so here's the deal, i made this my way
you can accept it, make ya own site on ya own puter
or donate ya puter (that nice PIII) to me and i'll pretty this bbs up with
some useless graphics
don't worry..if you don't like the "text interface of bbs" you aren't likely
to be into old puters so long that you'll need suffer *hehe*
Q: Why synchronet?
A: well i tried loads, this one runs, runs well
on the puter i assigned for job, it has good support, and it's free
and it's easy handling!!!
http://www.synchro.net also contains user and sysop docs
wlofie
