NON platform specific hints and tricks

Tips and trix

If your computer has an rs232 (serial port) and NO you CANNOT take manufacturers word for this,
CHECK the PINOUTS!!!
then you can null modem via terminal program, this saves you the need for a shell account and phone call cost.
DO check the null modem cable for DCD (carrier detect) since a cable can work well with a terminal program, yet not at all with zmodem if it has no CD. Some terminal programs of course allow CD as setting that you can turn off.
DON'T connect any plugs while power is on unless it SPECIFICALLY SAYS to do so in manual, if it does, read, reread and check again!!!

Ix86 pc's CAN format 1.44's to 720 kb even if they don't admit it
tape over the other hole (not the write protect tab) the other one
on a 1.44 disk. still both atari and amiga seem VERY touchy about
disks they will use. out of a 10 box of 1.44's i estimate between 2 and 4
usable disks(for amiga atari). rest go to ix86 pc's. (hey waste not want not)

to make disks readable other way (pc read st's disks) either edit disk (will post info here)
or use a program to fix it.

DO call up and nag tech support ppl, often manufacturer keeps old manuals
DO check their(manufacturers) homepages
DO NOT mess with it unless you _know_ you can handle it
DO get an outdoor/indoor thermometer (good idea anyway) and use "outdoor" probe
to check temp under lid of puter so it doesn't run too hot
